A Project for Better Journalism chapter

OG’s newest star

Transformed from a once quiet, shy girl to a determined, inspiring young woman, Maria Martinez took the stage. Martinez won the Escondido Rising Star award for February. The award is sponsored by the Escondido Chamber of Commerce and is given to a student that has demonstrated characteristics of dedication, integrity, compassion, and responsibility. A student from each school in the district was selected based on their academic success, dedication to the community and commitment to supporting their schools. The selected students attend a breakfast at Vintana with their family, teachers, and administration. Other people who attended the breakfast included community leaders, local political leaders, and members of the district office. Speeches were made about the selected person, who, in this case, was Martinez.

In her speech, publications adviser Jessica Young was able to express why she nominated her student, Martinez. “She is a leader among her peers and she sets an example for everyone around her. Maria is the kind of student every teacher dreams of having,” Young said.

The winners of the award go home with a goody bag full of trinkets donated by local businesses and thank you cards for the Escondido Chamber of commerce. At the end of the school year, all award winners are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship that is also sponsored by the chamber.
